AMETHYST is a GIS-based information
sharing system developed to map and share partnership information
across Cornwall (A 'one-stop-shop'). Cornwall and the Isles
of Scilly have a strong partnership foundation and recognise
that crime reduction is not solely the responsibility of the
Police, but is the joint responsibility of Police, local authorities
and other partner organisations.
AMETHYST was introduced in 2001 in response
to the growing demand to collect and share local data to support
Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) in reducing
crime and the fear of crime. By sharing information,
patterns of crime will be identified along with the underlying
causes; leading to more informative decision making, effective
targeting of resources and cohesive partnership working.
AMETHYST's development was funded by the Home
Office and through its developing success, has gained both national
and international recognition. Seen as good practice, it has
been referenced in: GIS and Crime Mapping -Spencer Chainey
& Jerry Ratcliffe and Crime Mapping-Improving Performance
-Police Standards Unit.
The AMETHYST system is built upon several industry
standards, including ERSI, for Web Mapping production and display.
It has been developed by Infotech
Enterprises Europe; a company renowned for its expertises
in GIS information systems and is a market leader in geospacial
solutions.
